Breast reconstruction

One in nine women has breast cancer.

Most of these cancers need a more or less invasive surgical treatment. In general, each patient could benefit from a breast reconstruction procedure. A proper assessment is needed to determine the type of reconstruction and understand the patient’s needs and expectations.

Breast reconstructions can be done using implant only, the patient’s own body tissues or a combination of implant and the patient’s own body tissues. When tissues are needed, the most common donor sites are the abdomen and the back. Each of these options has pros and cons. Each of them must be properly explained; in this way, the patient can make an informed decision.

At the end of the process, a nipple and areola reconstruction can be performed to achieve symmetry.
