Cosmetic and plastic surgery: Myths and misconceptions
What’s the difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery?
Did you know that there’s a difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery? Cosmetic surgery improves the appearance of a part of the face, arms, thighs, stomach, etc. While plastic surgery still values aesthetics, it also corrects more significant defects and lesions. It is also known as reconstructive surgery. It may be performed to correct birth defects, such as a cleft lip, or to repair a dysfunction, such as a deviated septum that makes breathing difficult.
More so than plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery is often met with strong criticism. Cosmetic surgery also has its share of myths. In this article, I’ll share the knowledge I have gained over my many years of experience and specialized education in the field to dispel a few preconceived notions about cosmetic surgery. Know that surgeons are trained for both cosmetic and plastic surgery.
A little history
We have been trying to change our appearance since the dawn of time. In ancient Egypt, various procedures, not all of them successful, were used to try to change the size and shape of the nose.
Much more recently, plastic surgery was developed during World War I. Large numbers of soldiers were hit by bullets or shrapnel that left them with drastic facial injuries or mutilated limbs. Soon after, World War II marked a turning point. With many left disabled, new techniques in reconstructive surgery appeared, including skin grafts for serious burns.
The 20th century saw many firsts: the first facelift in the 1920s, the first dermabrasion in 1952, the first laser surgery in 1961 and the first liposuction in 1977.
Today, plastic and cosmetic surgeries are common, increasingly safe, and constantly being improved through technological and scientific advances.
Cosmetic surgery: The fountain of youth?
From time immemorial, people have searched for rejuvenation and immortality. Living by the sea, in the desert or in polar regions, along with elixirs and the fountain of youth … there is no end to the experiments that have tried to counteract the effects of time.
Cosmetic surgery can create a more youthful appearance. However, keep in mind that surgery will not instantly make you look 25 or 30 years younger. The main goal, especially with regard to face surgery, is to better harmonize facial features as discreetly as possible.
Cosmetic surgery is always visible
False! Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t always easy to spot cosmetic surgery. In fact, the surgeon aims for a result that looks as natural as possible—unless, of course, the patient desires otherwise.
Cosmetic surgery is permanent
A popular belief, which may be the source of many misconceptions about cosmetic surgery, is that its effects are permanent. That isn’t the case. As we mentioned above, surgery is not the fountain of youth. Age and time will continue to act on the human body, even after the procedure.
If you opt for cosmetic surgery, keep in mind that just like laser surgery that corrects nearsightedness, the effects are not permanent and adjustments may be needed after a certain amount of time.
Only for women and the elite?
It is true that some years ago, women were more likely to get cosmetic surgery. However, things are different today. In fact, as we see with cosmetic products, men are turning to it in ever-greater numbers.
Similarly, cosmetic surgery is not only for stars or the elite. It has become very popular and accessible to all.
Psychological effects
Some people who are struggling with depression may be tempted to turn to cosmetic surgery to boost their mood. However, surgery is not like therapy. It must be done with full knowledge of the facts. The decision must be made by the person choosing to move forward with the procedure, and for themselves alone. It must not be done to please a partner or loved ones. When I meet with you for a consultation, I make a point of ensuring that you are choosing cosmetic surgery for yourself and your own well-being.
